Other common FAQ / Notes / Tips

  • Sharpener - Anything that works with a regular wooden pencil works with this set. Pencil sharpening knife, electric sharpener, sand paper etc...
  • Break - Due to fact that the pencil is essentially a piece of compressed charcoal, if dropped on hard floor it might break. So handle with care. Though even if any accident happens, all parts can still be used. Either by a pencil extender, or just scratch off the shell of the pencil and use as a piece of high quality compressed charcoal. Nothing would be wasted.
  • Tone Value - As mentioned and worth mentioning again: the greatest strength of charcoal is range of tone value it can deliver. While for very beginners it might feel harder to control vs graphite, it is essential as an artist to learn to use charcoal and take advantage of the contrast it can offer.
  • Pairing with ThePortraitArt Sketch book - My brand of sketchbook is designed to compliment with this pencil set. Each sheet from my sketchbook has 2 textures (smooth and rougher). This pencil set works well with both. Feel free to experiment and find out what effect you like. Rough side offers a bit more texture while smooth side is slightly better at blending.
  • No waste of stub - As the pencil gets too short to handle (even with pencil extender), simply scratch cover shell off with a sharp edge or sandpaper and use remainder as compressed charcoal. No waste vs traditional wooden pencil.
